Transforming an Outdated Bungalow into a Modern, Functional Home
At Red Mug Construction, we specialize in bringing new life to old spaces — and our recent project in Irving Park was the perfect example of that. This charming but outdated Chicago bungalow was ready for a full transformation, and we were up for the challenge.
We began with a complete first-floor renovation, prioritizing function, flow, and fresh finishes. The original layout felt closed off and dated, so we reimagined the space from the ground up — literally.
Step-by-Step Breakdown:

Demolition + Framing
We started by stripping the interior down to its bones, clearing the way for updated infrastructure and an open-concept layout. Our team added new framing to support the revised floor plan and enhance the home’s structure.
Flooring Upgrade

Next, we installed durable vinyl flooring throughout the first floor — a modern, low-maintenance option that’s perfect for everyday living.
Kitchen Renovation
The kitchen saw the biggest transformation. We relocated key appliances, opened up sight lines, and gave it a completely new look. Our team installed brand-new cabinets, modern countertops, and stainless steel appliances — creating a clean, functional space that blends seamlessly with the rest of the home.

Top Floor Upgrades
In addition to the first floor updates, we also made key improvements to the top level of the home. We replaced the existing flooring with the same durable vinyl planks used downstairs for a cohesive look, installed new baseboards, and gave the space a fresh coat of neutral paint to brighten and modernize the entire upper level.
From top to bottom, this bungalow now boasts the charm of Chicago architecture with all the functionality of a modern home. We're proud of the outcome and excited for what’s next!
